Interior Health operates 26 facilities with mortuary capacity. The capacity at each site is influenced by four primary factors:The number of physical refrigerated crypts availableAccess and flow of deceased patientsFuneral home and/or family arrangementsCultural and religious traditionsEach facility's baseline capacity is shared across its community, with utilization distributed among Acute, Long-Term, and Community Care Services, as well as deaths occurring outside the healthcare system and those under investigation by the BC Coroner-s Service.
As the population increases, the demand for morgue space is anticipated to rise accordingly. To address these growing needs and acknowledge the fixed capacity at current sites, the system must proactively plan for the availability of morgue facilities and related services.
